Post 9/11 GI Bill information briefs set Published June 19, 2009 By Education Services Office 72nd Force Support Squadron TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Did you know that the Tinker Base Education Services will conduct briefings at the base theater at 9 a.m. Monday and June 29 to provide current information on the Post 9-11 G.I.Bill? · The Post 9/11 GI Bill becomes effective Aug. 1 · All Airmen with honorable service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for the Post9/11 GI Bill · The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of full-time educational benefits -- and possibly more · The Post 9/11 GI Bill is free (no $1,200 payroll deduction) · The Post 9/11 GI Bill is based on total aggregate service, so some members will receive increased benefits for longer service · The Post 9/11 GI Bill pays the cost of tuition and fees, a book stipend and a monthly housing allowance for veterans · The Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits are different if used on active duty · The Post 9/11 GI Bill can be used with Air Force Tuition Assistance for certain courses · The Post 9/11 GI Bill does not pay for books, or housing allowance when used on active duty · The Post 9/11 GI Bill has a transferability option to dependents · Transferring the Post 9/11 GI Bill to dependents may require additional active duty commitment time · Members can qualify for both the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and the Montgomery GI Bill · Spouses can use the Post 9/11 GI immediately upon the sponsor's election to transfer it · Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill children must use the transferred Post 9/11 GI Bill benefit between the ages of 18 and 26 · The Post 9/11 GI Bill has extended the delimitating date to 15 years · The Post 9/11 GI Bill can only be used at an approved institution of higher learning · A proportional amount of the $ 1,200 payroll contribution for the MGIB will be refunded after using all of the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits · The $600 Increased Benefit Contribution (Plus-Up) of the MGIB cannot be refunded if member converts to the Post 9/11 GI Bill · The Post 9/11 GI Bill is vastly different from the MGIB and these two benefits should be carefully compared before converting or transferring · Using the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Air Force tuition assistance together (Top-Up) charges one month of benefit use for each month, and partial month, of class length · The Post 9/11 GI Bill does not pay for Distance Learning programs · Children using the Post 9/11 GI Bill can also receive the housing allowance and book stipend The Post 9/11 GI Bill briefings conducted by Base Education Services at the base theater at 9 a.m. Monday and June 29, are free and open to everyone.
