The Defense Distribution Depot Oklahoma City, Preservation, Packaging, Packing and Marking, woodworking team was awarded the 2008 Department of Defense Packaging Achievement Award.

The team was invited to the 2008 DOD Packaging Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., for the formal presentation of the award, where they received a plaque and a guided tour of the Pentagon. Augustus Mays, acting director for DDOO, was in attendance to support the team for the presentation of the award.

The PPP&M woodworking team builds protective crating for aircraft parts that exceed normal dimensions and weight limitations.

The team averages crating of more than 900 items per month, with some containers taking in excess of a week to construct.

Benchmarking is an important aspect of packaging, and the DDOO PPP&M woodworking team often works closely with packing technicians to identify ways to lean processes.

One example of the team's commitment to excellence was the creation of new packaging instructions which succeeded in preventing damage to the B-52 Nose Radome between drop points, resulting in a cost avoidance of roughly $500,000 per month.

Norma Welch, chief, PPP&M Branch, said "Each member of the team is dedicated to the Defense Logistics Agency's mission and always volunteers to go the extra mile to meet the customer's request."

The winning team consisted of team supervisor Dustin Gore, woodworker leader Donnie Wingate, and woodworkers Larry Barrett, Charles Cutting, Larry Dalton, David Howard, Alfredo Sanchez, Shannon Schwartz and Steven Carr.
