It’s time to play ball Published June 5, 2009 By John E. Banks Tinker Public Affaris TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- As the temperatures begin to warm up, so will the action on the diamond at Tinker as the intramural softball season gets under way. "This year we will have the most athletes and most teams competing in three different leagues," said Pat Griffin, sports director at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. Teams will play on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Tinker Sports Complex. There will be three fields in action through the month of August. "The staff has put in a lot of work fighting the elements of weather, trying to get the diamonds ready for play," said Griffin. The three divisions are: large squadron, small squadron and co-ed. The current base champion, 552nd Maintenance Squadron, will try and fend off all teams en route to its ninth-consecutive base title. "This year there are a lot of teams who have great promise and could challenge MXS for the crown," said Griffin. Come out and support your squadron athletes in their endeavors on the softball diamond. For more information, call your squadron sports representatives or the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center at 734-3651.
