72nd Med Group blanks 38th EIG 4-0 Published May 28, 2009 By John E. Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The 2009 Intramural Soccer playoffs are in full swing. The 72nd Medical Group took another step toward their championship goal with a 4-0 shutout of the 38th Engineering Installation Group on May 20 at the Airman Leadership School Soccer Field. 72nd Med Group assistant coach and striker Michael McCabe said his team was fired up after the loss to the first-place team the night before. "We want the opportunity to play them again," he said. The first 10 minutes of play was dominated by the 72nd Med Group. Reserve halfback Si Yong Kim sent a 20-yard pass to striker Wade Olsen, who drilled a blistering shot in the left corner of the net to put the 72nd Med Group up 1-0 at 6:22. The 72nd Med Group continued the pressure as McCabe scored the first of his two goals with a quick right-footed blast just inside the penalty area at 11:15. The third tally of the half was the most elusive. McCabe sent a corner kick from the left side of the pitch and it sliced and diced in the wind and found its way to the back of the net, making it 3-0 at 21:34. "I really did not mean for the ball to go in that way, but I will take it," said McCabe. The 38th EIG came out like gang busters controlling the first 20 minutes of the second half. They had six great scoring chances; however, 72nd Med Group goalkeeper Jim Quirke thwarted all attempts. "We are primarily a bunch of engineers with an average age of 40-something and this is the farthest we have ever made it in the playoffs," said Trevor Smith, head coach and fullback for 38th EIG. The final goal of the game was a result of a quick 30-yard pass from McCabe to Olsen, who sent a shot just outside the penalty area to the far left corner of the net, making the score 4-0 at 23:24. "We were disappointed in our performance in this game," Smith said. "We will rebound and put forth more effort next year."
