Action Line: Handicap parking spaces Published May 13, 2009 By 72nd Air Base Wing TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Tinker Commander's Action Line is a communications channel established for personnel to bring problems and observations to the commander's attention. The Action Line serves as an avenue for affecting positive change across Tinker Air Force Base and has led to improvements in safety, working conditions, quality of life and a better understanding of base programs and processes. When inquires or comments are forwarded, a direct response should be received in a timely manner. While we hope individuals will seek a more timely resolution of issues through their facility management or unit command channels, an individual may e-mail "Tinker Commander's Action Line" on the global list, CommandersActionLine@tinker.af.mil. Handicap parking spaces Q: The Americans with Disabilities Act states that businesses will provide sufficient handicap parking spaces. I'm not sure what constitutes sufficient, but I'm sure the commissary and the Base Exchange don't have it. The commissary spots are filled usually by 9 a.m. and pretty much stay filled the rest of the day. I shop at the BX three or four times per week and can count on one hand the number of times I didn't have to walk from a long distance to the store. Can you please do something about this? A: Thank you for your concern with the parking at the Base Exchange and Commissary. You are correct; the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standard (a derivative of the Americans with Disabilities Act) provides instruction to determine the number of handicap parking spaces required for a given facility. However, the handicap parking that is currently available at the BX and Commissary exceeds this requirement. We will monitor the parking situation at these parking lots over the coming weeks and make future adjustments to the amount of handicap parking if necessary.
