Commander’s Action Line: Misuse of parking spaces

Q:I use the parking lot adjacent to the north end of Bldg. 3001 where there are eight handicap parking places. Half of them are parked in by someone without a handicap place card. Also people park up against the building and in the fire lane. I have reported this several times. Security Forces says this falls on the parking wardens. I understand there are not enough wardens, so areas are just a free for all. I was a parking warden when I was in the Air Force and have volunteered to be one again to monitor this lot and the ramp area at the north end of 3001. These areas are out of control.

A: Thank you for alerting us to this issue. While control of parking has been delegated to the units associated with their attached parking areas, parking wardens may not always be able to meet the requirements of enforcement. Our parking wardens work very hard to identify violators and enforce code. If you ever feel they are missing a specific problem area, please feel free to call the Force Protection Operations Center at 734-3737. If Security Forces cannot respond immediately, they will notify the Reports and Analysis section who will make a call to the specific parking warden for that area. If a certain parking lot has increased problems with unauthorized parking, the 72nd SFS/Operations Flight will initiate a targeted enforcement effort to reduce the number of violations.

People who illegally park in handicap spaces not only deny those who need these spaces of their use, but are also in jeopardy of losing their base driving privileges for 30 days. With your help and others like you, we will continue to try and eliminate this problem.
