May is a month filled with new energy and the anticipation of spring and summer fun. People get off the couch and work their way into outdoor activities. Not only are the flowers in bloom, the grass turns a luscious green and people's mental and physical awareness also seems to get a jump start. Maybe that's why each May is recognized as "Fitness Month."

At Tinker, a full variety of "let's get the ball rolling activities" are planned to get the base involved in the celebration of May Fitness Month.

Here's what the month holds.

The "Tinker Lean" program gets things under way beginning May 4 and running through July 10. This health incentive competition among five-member teams from around base encourages and recognizes those who have taken it upon themselves to lose weight and exercise to enhance their overall health. It's a great way to get with others who have similar goals and is characterized by healthy competition to achieve this goal.

On May 8, Gerrity Fitness Center will be the site of an always popular Boxing Smoker, which features a full card of exciting bouts between members of most or all the military branches. Active duty military, both male and female, are eligible to compete in this spirited competition. All who have authorized access to Tinker Air Force Base may come watch the event. The bouts will start promptly at 7 p.m.

Gerrity Fitness Center and the Health and Wellness Center will host a Health Fair and Aerobithon on May 9. The health fair will present helpful guidance on a variety of health issues and provide free body comp measurements beginning at 8 a.m. and the Aerobithon will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at noon. Participants in the Aerobithon may sample a wide variety of aerobic classes offered at Tinker. There is no charge for participating.

A pre-season softball tournament will be conducted May 16. All teams wishing to participate should contact Pat Griffin at the Gerrity Fitness Center at 734-3651.

May 30 has been designated for America's Armed Forces Kids and Intramural Fun Run/Walk. The 1.5-mile and 3.3-mile options will start at 9 a.m. at the Hill Conference Center. Youth 18 and under can register at the Youth Center 734-7866 and active duty members should register by calling Chris Millsap at the HAWC at 734-5066 or Mrs. Griffin at 734-3651. T-shirts will be awarded to the first 75 finishers in each distance.
