Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The intramural basketball playoffs started last week at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. Below are capsules of some of the games played. 552nd MXS races past 34th CCS The defending large squadron basketball champions, 552nd Maintenance Squadron started their defense of the title with a decisive 55-32 victory over a game but undermanned 34th Combat Communications Squadron squad Feb. 25. While both teams got off to a sluggish start, the 552nd MXS outscored their opponent 30-12 over the last 10 minutes of second half to secure the victory. The 552nd MXS was led in scoring by forward Charles McCray who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. 72nd MDG defeats 72nd SFS The 72nd Medical Group used a 20-2 run over the last 5 minutes of the second half to beat the 72nd Security Forces Squadron, 53-37, Feb. 23. The 72nd SFS held a slim 35-33 lead with 5:03 remaining in the contest when the tide turned. The 72nd Med Group rally was led by point guard Marquis Mitchell, who scored 14 consecutive points. Mitchell was the leading scorer of contest with 22 points while dishing out seven assists. SCW-1 sails past 72nd FSS The small squadron No. 2 seed, Strategic Communications Wing ONE, used a balanced scoring attack and a stifling defense en route to a 53-29 victory over the 72nd Force Support Squadron Feb. 24. SCW-1 led 22-18 at the halftime break. Their stifling defense and quick opportunistic offense led them on a 20-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half enabling them to capture the victory. Point guard Marcus Williams led SCW-1 on the score sheet with 15 points on six of seven shooting from the field. He also handed out a team-high six assists. The SHO goes on The SHO, defending small squadron and reigning base champions, used a tight defense and hot shooting of guard Vincent Yohannan to survive and defeat the Gym Rats, 48-43, in small squadron intramural basketball playoff action Feb. 26. The match up of two of the best teams in the small squadron pool was nip and tuck throughout the game. Though Yohannan scored a little more than half his team's points, the team relied on Ben Jones at the end. Jones hit four consecutive free throws in the final minute of play to secure the victory. Yohannan was the scoring leader for the game with 26 points. He also had four assists and four steals to pace his team.
