Winter trout season going strong

Tinker's fifth winter trout season is still going strong according to base biologist Ray Moody.

"We are truly pleased with the success of our winter trout fishing program," Moody said. "In the winter fishing opportunities greatly decrease when our warm water fish such as bass, sunfish and catfish become less active. However, hatchery-raised rainbow and brown trout thrive in the cold, clear base waters during the winter months and are easily caught."

So it's not too late to get out and catch a good stringer of Rainbow trout. Beaver and Redbud Ponds at the Fam Camp were stocked the second week of January, and, because of the cold temperatures and ice cover, many trout are expected to still be there for the catching. More than 1,000 Rainbow trout were stocked this season, thanks to Tinker trout stamp permit sales.

An Oklahoma fishing license, base fishing permit and seasonal Tinker Trout Stamp are required to fish for trout on Tinker. These are available at Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 478. A state trout stamp is not required.

"The base trout stamp enables us to continue stocking trout on Tinker with all funds from the sales going to trout stocking," Moody said. The price for a trout stamp is $10 and with a $15 family fishing permit is good for the entire family.

The catch limit for trout is six per day and 12 in possession. Some favorite baits are worms, spinners and power baits. Tinker is one of only two trout fishing locations in the Oklahoma City metro area. Moody said that he likes to liven up the catch possibilities by stocking 50 pounds of trout in the 16- to 20-inch range.
