The Youth Basketball campaign kicked of its 15th season at the Tinker Youth Center Feb. 7.

This year, 100 players and coaches graced the 94-foot playing surface with 100 fans cheering in attendance.

"Our leagues promote sportsmanship, teamwork and a positive attitude here at the Youth Center," said Mindy Whittington, sports and fitness director.

Twelve teams played in three age categories during the first weekend of action. Each of the three age groups had four teams participating on the court as start of league play.

"These kids are really excited and it is a thrill to see them on the court," said Tracy Patterson, head coach of the 7- and 8-year old Suns.

All of these teams have been practicing once a week since mid-January and are trying to hone their fundamental skills on the court.

"Our goal at the Youth Center is to provide these players a chance to work on fundamentals and have a positive playing experience," said Whittington.

The league runs a round-robin format where each team will face each other three to four times during the season. The season will last approximately six months.

Whittington has been the recipient of the Excellence in Youth Sports National Alliance award twice and is using her experience to ensure these kids get the best opportunity on the court.

"I believe you give them a chance and great things will happen," said Whittington. For more information on activities at the Tinker Youth Center, call 734-7866.
