Gerrity staff readies for upcoming events Published Feb. 6, 2009 By John E. Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center staff is readying for two upcoming winter intramural events, expecting to draw some of the dormant winter athletes out of seclusion onto the hardwood and running track. Both will take place during the weekend of Feb. 27 to March 1. "These events have been successful in the past and we are looking for more participation this year," said Pat Griffin, sports director of the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. The first event to be staged will be the 2009 Intramural Racquetball tournament to be held at the Tinker Fitness Center Annex, Bldg. 216. This event is open to all active duty, reservists and civilians assigned to Tinker Air Force Base. "Last year's tournament had some great competition in the singles and doubles competition and we look for more of the same," said Griffin. The second event of the weekend will be the intramural five-kilometer run that will take place at 8 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Hill Conference Center. The running events at Tinker are ones that garner the most participation of the minor intramural sports. "This run is conjunction with the Wildcatter runs helps promote increased cardiovascular physical fitness for the average athlete to the top flight athlete at Tinker," said Griffin.
