In today's economic crisis the personal savings rate is near zero and most Americans are not saving for retirement. Most lower-income households do not have adequate emergency savings for unexpected expenditures such as car repairs or medical expenses. Currently, Americans are encouraged to build debt not wealth as we live in a nation that depends on credit.

The Department of Defense and various financial partners are working together to help active duty members, DOD civilians, contractors and family members change this mindset during Military Saves Week, which runs from Feb. 23 through March 1. The Airman and Family Readiness Center, Tinker Federal Credit Union, First National Bank, Military One Source and FINRA have teamed up to help members of Team Tinker learn the miracle of compound interest.

During Military Saves Week, individuals will receive information on how to build wealth through financial seminars and information tables. Activities will be scattered across the base to ensure access is easy and available. Workshops and information tables will give people tools to begin smart saving habits, pay off debt quickly and begin working toward a debt-free future.
