552nd MXS roundballer aims high with goal to play for Air Force team Published Jan. 22, 2009 By John E. Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- Military service offers individuals a variety of outlets to test oneself on and off duty. For Kirk Sheppard, 552nd Maintenance Squadron, the outlet of choice is basketball -- and at the highest level of competition the Air Force has to offer. "I never thought I would be able to play at this level upon entering the Air Force; however, I am sure glad that I have this opportunity," said Sheppard. Sheppard, who hails from Milwaukee, is a sixth-generation military member. His decision to join the Air Force after graduation from high school was already done before collegiate scholarships came a calling. Sheppard is currently playing for the 552nd MXS intramural team and Tinker Hawks, a varsity-level team that competes in the Southwest Military Men's Basketball League. He is averaging 24 points per game while grabbing 14 rebounds per game. "Basketball keeps me grounded and motivated. It is a good outlet for me and keeps me in shape all year round. It also allows me to travel, represent my unit and the Air Force, and networking. I am truly proud to represent the USAF in this way," said Sheppard. Sheppard recalls fondly the basketball year he had in 2008. He captured the 2008 United States Air Forces in Europe and Component Command Air North Headquarters, and USAF and Army tournament team titles. Additionally, he was unanimously selected as the CCAN tournament most valuable player. "That was by far my best year in basketball. It was nice to get the clean sweep," said Sheppard. Sheppard's goals for 2009 are ones that he has been trying to get done for the past three years. He has always wanted to pit his skills against the best basketball players in the Air Force and this year his wishes may become reality. "In years past, I have wanted to put in my AF 303; however, military obligations came first. I hope I can get it worked out so I can try and see where I stack up against the best in the Air Force," said Sheppard. "Kirk is a great asset to our team. His talent is amazing, but his calmness and great character are the traits that help our team be successful," said Clarence Griffin, Tinker Hawks head coach.
