The basketball action heated up once again at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center on Jan. 6.

The talented team from Strategic Communications Wing 1 defeated the 327th Air Sustainment Wing 53-44 in a small squadron intramural basketball game before a crowd of 150 onlookers.

The game got off to a quick start as guard Calvin Hall hit two, three-point field goals getting his team to a quick 6-0 lead.

The lead blossomed to 14-4 behind the hot shooting of guard Marcus Williams and forward Brandon Collier, each scoring four points.

The 327th ASW went on an 8-4 run over the next four minutes of the first half to cut the lead to 18-12. The run was spearheaded by guard Mark Jansen and David Acklin, who poured in four points apiece.

The remainder of the first half was a back and forth affair and the score was 26-14 at the break.

The second half started like the first half with the SCW-1 hitting shot after shot. Williams, Collier and Hall all hit two shots apiece in the first five minutes of the half, growing the lead to 32-22.

The 327th ASW valiantly mounted a comeback. They decided to implement a full-court pressure defense and it paid off.

Over the next five minutes they outscored their opponents 14-6, making the score 38-36 with 6 minutes remaining in the contest.

SCW-1 turned the tables and Williams scored eight consecutive points to seal the victory. In the end, SCW-1 depth and timely field goal shooting was the difference enabling them to a hard-fought 53-44 triumph.

"Our opponents were too deep and very athletic and it was difficult to overcome that," said Jansen.

The SCW-1 was led in scoring by Hall and Williams, who scored 19 and 14 points, respectively.

The 327th ASW was led by Acklin who chipped in 14 points. The win by SCW-1 improves their record to 3-1, while the loss drops the 327th ASW to 2-2.
