Lady Hawks split games with Fort Sill Published Jan. 15, 2009 By John E. Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The Tinker Lady Hawks continued their winning ways with a resounding and dominant victory 79-39 over the Fort Sill Lady Cannoneers at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center on Jan 10. This game was not in doubt from the outset as the Lady Hawks raced to an early 20-4 lead and were never challenged for the rest of the contest. The early onslaught was paced by forward Ashanda Williams who tallied 10 points during the run. "We wanted to get out fast and take it to our opponents and we accomplished that feat," said Carlos Hopkins, head coach for the Lady Hawks. Williams finished the game with 26 points to lead the Lady Hawks scorers, while fellow forward Alicia Roberts scored 16. The second tilt of the weekend doubleheader was different than game one as the Lady Cannoneers hung on for a 62-59 win over the Lady Hawks on Jan. 11 at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. The entire game was nip and tuck as neither side gained more than a four-point advantage. It came down to the final shot. Reserve guard Octavia McCleod had an opportunity to tie the game, but her three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short. "They played a lot better than yesterday, and we could not hit the shots we needed to," said Hopkins. The Lady Hawks were paced once again by Williams who scored 25 and Roberts who had 14.
