DOD award honors 448th achievements in new Global Logistics Support Center Published Dec. 17, 2008 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The Air Force Global Logistics Center's 448th Supply Chain Management Planning and Execution Wing has reason to celebrate this holiday season. The unit won the award for "Best Logistics Strategy" at the recent Defense Logistics 2008 conference and awards ceremony, held in Washington, D.C. Dec. 3. The 448th SCMW competed against other Department of Defense and defense industry agencies for the top honor. "This is a significant recognition of our accomplishments and a reinforcement that we are on the right path to achieving our vision and mission for being the most respected supply chain leader in supply chain planning and execution in the Air Force," said Scott Reynolds, 448th SCMW director, who attended the conference and awards ceremony. The 448th SCMW is the planning and execution arm of the AFGLSC. Established this past April, the AFGLSC is headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and is comprised of three wings and seven groups spread out throughout the United States. The "Best Logistics Strategy" award is designed to honor and recognize a leading logistics team whose program has "improved logistics processes or delivered logistics excellence," according to the application submission form. The centerpiece of the award submission was the wing's 1000-Day Strategic Plan, which kicked off April 30. Mr. Reynolds said the primary tenets of the 1000-Day Strategic Plan include focused improvements in supply chain forecasting accuracy, strategic sourcing and workload development supported by enabling tools, metrics and governance through continuous process improvement. The 448th SCMW built the 1000-Day Plan in collaboration with their IBM Supply Chain Management partners, who assisted the Air Force in improving the Air Force's supply chain since 2003. Mr. Reynolds said a key approach to achieving critical results is through the Air Force's continuous process improvement methodology known as the Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century. AFSO21 provides the tools and improvement methods utilizing the best practices in lean and process improvement from around the globe to ensure consistent and repeatable results. "This recognition is acknowledgement of the dedicated efforts of every person in the 448th SCMW," Mr. Reynolds said. "The hard work and dedication to the AFGLSC mission and vision demonstrates our drive for world-class leadership in supply chain management, but we have so much more to do. In a challenging economic environment, it is even more important to deliver optimum results within our approved budget through streamlined supply chain and logistics processes." The Defense Logistics 2008 awards ceremony was established to recognize logisticians in the U.S. Department of Defense and the defense industry who have made significant contributions to military logistics.
