The 2008 Flag Football playoffs got off to a roaring start Nov. 12 with the Wednesday Night League champs, 964th Airborne Air Control Squadron, pitting their gridiron skills against the No. 2 seed from the Monday Night League, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron FOUR. The result was a hard-fought 7-0 win by the 964th AACS.

The game was played under the bright lights and a brisk wind covered the field making the playing conditions tougher than normal.

The first and second quarters were dominated by the defenses. Each defensive unit thwarted drives by their opposition and the first half was scoreless.

During the third quarter, the offense of the 964th AACS took hold of the game. Quarterback Christopher Brooks drove his team down the field completing four-of-six passes for 49 yards. The drive culminated with a five-yard touchdown pass to Brian Welde. The ensuing extra-point was successful giving the 964th AACS a 7-0 lead.

The score remained at 7-0 with four minutes left on the clock and the Sailors from VQ-4 tried one last attempt to tie the score. Their drive, which started on their own 40-yard line, started successfully behind the running of backup-quarterback Davodrick Richardson. He had 30 yards on three rushes.

Richardson kept the drive alive completing two passes to tight end Rudy Mata, moving the ball to the 964th AACS eight-yard line.

With time expiring, Richardson rolled to the left and threw a pass that fell incomplete. The close win vaulted the 964th AACS into the second round of the winner's bracket, while the loss dropped VQ-4 into the elimination bracket.

The players of the game were Brooks, who completed 12-of-19 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown, and Richardson, who had eight rushes for 56 yards and completed four-of-nine passes for 76 yards.

"We gave it our best shot, however we came up a little short tonight," said Demon Ireland, VQ-4 head coach.
