The first position round matchup of the 2008-09 Commanders Trophy League bowling season took place Nov. 5 at the Tinker Bowling Center.

The battle between Cocky Walkers, the third place team, and fourth place 76th Maintenance Wing ended with the Cocky Walkers prevailing 3202-3163.

"Our team always looks forward to the position round because it gives us a measurement of how well we will compete against the top teams in the league," said Robert Munroe, captain for 76th MXW.

The first game of the match was closely contested. The 76th MXW surged ahead after the third frame as Christopher Sweet threw two strikes, leading his team to a 335-308 advantage.

The Cocky Walkers regrouped over the next three frames as Dallas Thompson and Jeremy Allen each threw a pair of strikes enabling their team to seize the lead 482-475. For the rest of the game, the teams matched each other strike for strike and spare for spare. The determining factor came in the tenth frame as the Cocky Walkers threw a team total of seven strikes to their opponents' four giving them an 1104-1061 victory.

The second game of the match was much like the end of the first. The Cocky Walkers, led by Thompson and Mike Cumella, threw strike after strike. The duo combined for five strikes over the first three frames giving their side a 418-399 lead.

The game was sealed as the members of the Cocky Walkers -- Thompson, David Jackson, Cummela, Allen and Rick Stutzman -- threw a combined 10 consecutive strikes in two frames to put their team up 908-843.

The 76th MXW tried to muster a comeback, but it was not enough. The Cocky Walkers rolled to an 1121-1082 convincing game two win.

In the third game of this position round match, the Cocky Walkers scratched and clawed their way to a 1077-1020 victory, thus capturing all eight points. They were lead by Thompson, who rolled a 237 and had a 703 three game total pin fall.

"We bowled to our average and they were just one step ahead of us. Congratulations to Dallas Thompson on his 703 series," said Munroe.

The Cocky Walker's win solidified their third place standing and improved their record to 54.0-26.0. With the loss, the 76th MXW falls to fifth place with a 44.0-36.0 record.
