The Health and Wellness Center is encouraging service members, their families, retired beneficiaries and Department of Defense civilians to "Make Everyone Proud" and quit using tobacco products.

A DOD marketing campaign is kicking off focused on supporting all Team Tinker members who want to quit. Materials and tools also are available to individuals wanting to kick their tobacco habit on www.ucanquit2.org.

The official Web site of the Quit Tobacco--Make Everyone Proud educational campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. The mission of the site is to help uniformed service personnel quit tobacco -- for themselves and for the people they love -- but the website can be used by all of the DOD. Headquarters Air Force Material Command has also developed civilian posters available through the HAWCs which focus on supporting DOD civilian employees with the same theme.

This Web-based cessation information and support tool provides help to those wanting to quit tobacco and those helping others to quit tobacco. On the site, users can develop a personalized quit plan; get information; play games; listen to podcasts; connect to federal, military, state, local and online cessation programs; and communicate privately with a trained cessation counselor seven days a week between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 (active duty members only).

In conjunction with the marketing materials of the "Make Everyone Proud" campaign, the HAWC will also sponsor several events in support of the Great American Smokeout to be held this year on Nov. 20. The Great American Smokeout promotion is the American Cancer Society's annual, nationally recognized day when they ask smokers to put down their cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco or any tobacco product because they all have the potential to cause health risks.

"We are sponsoring an 'Adopt a Tobacco User' division in the Turkey Trot 5-kilometer race on Nov. 8. The division teams a non-tobacco user with a tobacco user to run 1.5 miles together. They guess their team time at registration and can't use any timing devices during the race. The closest team to their guess time wins. There is also a squadron competition for the most participants in a unit," says Karen Blackwell, chief of Health Promotions. "In addition we will be at various squadron events and the employee health fair in Bldg. 3001 on Wednesday and Thursday in the Oklahoma Room to give people more information on how to quit or support to someone else quitting".

The following food specials will be at Services facilities in support of quit efforts:

The Bowling Center - Pin Deck Snack Bar Turkey Chef Salad special Nov. 8, $3.98.

Tinker Golf Course - Turkey sandwich with chips and a drink, $3, Nov. 8.

Tinker Club - Free lunch buffet every Monday in November for any Tinker Club Member that registered to run in the "Quit Tobacco. Make everyone proud." Run on Nov. 8. Participants must make reservations by Thursday of each week for the following Monday lunch buffet.
