Virtual in-processing aims to save time, mistakes Published Oct. 24, 2008 By Brandice Armstrong Tinker Publid Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla., -- The 72nd Civilian Personnel Flight implemented the Civilian Virtual In-processing program recently. The cVIP application is Web based and will support all aspects of employment in-processing, including validating and verifying eligibility for employment. cVIP also streamlines complex in-processing documentation. By using cVIP, selected candidates will provide required information over the Internet. The information will populate electronic in-processing forms. Upon completion, a member of the CPF will review the forms to ensure all required blocks are completed. If more information is needed, it can be answered before the in-processing deadline. "It's going to save time and money in the end," said Sherilyn McCalister, acting 72nd CPF chief. "It's also going to ensure more accuracy, because all required information can be reviewed and verified prior to the actual in-processing date." Prior to the implementation of cVIP, civilian personnel sent civilian candidates vital documents, including veterans' preference and a statement of prior federal service, via e-mail. Candidates were responsible for filling them out and returning the completed forms at the in-processing appointment. If a portion of the form wasn't completed, the applicant was instructed during the in-processing appointment to get the necessary information and bring it back at a later date. If the necessary information wasn't returned in a timely manner or was lost in the process, it could impact an individual's personnel records. Ms. McCalister said cVIP benefits far outweigh its challenges, especially for applicants. "[Applicants] can do this outside the scope of normal business hours," Ms. McCalister said. "They can complete the required paperwork more efficiently and conveniently, even from the comfort of their own home." Ms. McCalister said cVIP is not new to the Air Force. Other Department of Defense agencies and Air Force installations, particularly those that service multiple bases, implemented cVIP to help hiring processes several years ago.
