Maj. John Zapata assumed command of the 3rd Combat Communications Support Squadron from Maj. Vanessa Johnson on July 11.

"In my opinion command is the biggest honor that can be bestowed upon an officer. To be given the opportunity to lead Airmen, insuring their well being and safety in the midst of accomplishing the mission is a huge responsibility. To be chosen to lead this group of individuals is an absolute dream come true," said Major Johnson.

Major Johnson will be continuing her Air Force career at the Pentagon.

Major Zapata comes to Tinker from Washington D.C. where he served as Chief, Air Attaché Affairs Branch, Air Force Foreign Liaison Division, Office of the Assistant Vice Chief of Staff.

As the new commander, Major Zapata will be responsible for a squadron that is the hub of mission planning and providing qualified personnel to support operational deployments.

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to command. I will do my best to further the proud tradition of excellence in the Herd, provide my best to the unit, our Airmen and their families," said Major Zapata. "I am humbled and honored to take the lead of the 3rd Combat Communications Squadron."
