The culmination of Oklahoma City's Navy Week took place when Triple A baseball's Oklahoma Redhawks hosted a Navy night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City June 12 in front of 3,000 fans.
The event was part of a weeklong celebration of the U.S. Navy in Oklahoma City. The fans and players watched a traditional display of patriotism and honor as the Navy Honor Guard from the Strategic Communications Wing One presented the colors and the Navy band "Freedom" performed the national anthem.
"This is our way of giving back to the Navy folks in Oklahoma City and at Tinker. A lot of people don't know we have a large contingent of Sailors here but with this type of event, I think the word will spread," said John Allgood, Redhawks general manager.
The flags of the nation, state of Oklahoma and the Navy rippled in the wind as one of the members of the Navy band finished the national anthem. Fans and players alike gave a standing ovation to the color guard while they marched off the field and into the stands before the first pitch. A chant of "Go Navy" resonated loudly through the stands.
"Our goal was to provide a glimpse of the Navy here in Oklahoma and I think we definitely succeeded," said Mr. Allgood.
