The motto of this year 2008 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, "A Run to Remember", was embraced by all participants and support personnel alike.
"The support volunteers that come from Tinker are an invaluable asset to the successful completion of the marathon," said Randy Svenson, public relations director of the marathon.
The roles of the support personnel are to provide racing kits, water, act as course marshals, and provide morale support to all the runners and walkers in the marathon.
A total of 200 runners from Tinker participated in this year's marathon. They ran in the marathon, half marathon and marathon relay.
"I really enjoyed this marathon relay. Our team had a blast and I think we posted a great time," said Kyle Jansen, a member of the Tinker marathon relay team.
Each individual who ran in the marathon received a commemorative T-shirt and participation medal.
"The preparation that goes into the event as a runner is very strenuous. The reward comes from the people supporting you and the onlookers along the way. They say way to go and thank you the entire race long. It is a thrill to run in this event in memory of the Oklahoma City Memorial," said Jansen.
Each year the marathon grows in numbers of participants and volunteers. The marathon itself could not be a success without the role of the volunteer staff.
"The volunteers are the key to success of the event. Their service gives us the ability to put on a first-class event," said Svenson.
