AFMC selecting running team for Air Force Marathon Published April 24, 2008 Services Marketing TINKER AIR FORCE BASE -- In support of the annual U.S. Air Force Marathon -- commemorating the founding of the Air Force on Sept. 18, 1947 -- Air Force Materiel Command will select a command running team comprised of eight active duty members. Two male and two female runners will be chosen for the full marathon. Two male and two female runners will also be chosen for the half marathon. This annual event has excellent outreach potential for elite active duty runners. The marathon will be held on Sept. 20 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. To be eligible for selection, individuals must be active duty members and assigned to AFMC. Anyone who is interested must submit an individual nomination on Air Force Form 303, Specialized Sports Training. Copies of other race competitions must also be included. Deadline for individual nomination is May 15. Selection is based on most recent experience and fastest times. The Tinker Gerrity Fitness Center director will then forward the most qualified individuals for full and half marathon categories. In the past, several applicants from Tinker have been selected for the marathon. Danny Ponder of the 557th Aircraft Sustainment Squadron has participated in the marathon every year since its inception. "It's a great event and well organized," said Ponder. However, applicants do not need the experience that runners like Ponder have. Many applicants chosen from Tinker were first-time marathon runners. Each team member selected will be granted permissive temporary duty status in accordance with Air Force Instruction 36-3003, Military Leave Program. AFMC Services will also reimburse travel and lodging expenses up to the maximum of $850 for travel and $80 for lodging. AFMC Services will also provide an $8-a-day maintenance allowance for three days, running top, shorts and entry fee.
