The champions of the Commander's Trophy Bowling League were crowned April 9 at the Tinker Bowling Center as Defense Information Systems Agency dethroned the defending champions 76th Maintenance Wing, 3,417-3,105.
In the first game of the championship match, the 76th MXW got off to a flying start behind the bowling of Dawn Sweet, Andy Anderson and Jo Deatherage. The trio combined for seven strikes over the first three frames, giving their side a 320-263 lead.
DISA turned up the heat as Jonathan Goodlin and Malachi Murphy responded with seven combined strikes to recapture the lead at 360-325.
Both teams matched each other strike for strike and spare for spare. The game was decided in the ninth frame as Jonathan Goodlin, Wayne Goodlin and Nick Lawter rolled strikes to give their side a 991-919 lead. The tenth frame saw the Goodlin pair dash all hopes of the 76th MXW with six more strikes to win the game 1,161-1,089.
"Our key to winning game one and getting off to a good start was purely luck. We as a team had a lot of backdoor strikes," said Jonathan Goodlin, DISA team captain.
The DISA squad delivered an overwhelming performance in the second game, as each of the bowlers rolled a 200 game
The quintet of Mike Wang, Lawter, Murphy and the Goodlin duo bowled 201, 270, 225, 246 and 230, respectively.
"That was by far the best game we bowled as a team all year long," said Wayne Goodlin.
The final game of the championship match was a close one. DISA held a slight 403-372 advantage after the first three frames. The lanes tightened up some as both teams struggled to throw strikes. However, each team picked up their spares to keep it close.
The game came down to the tenth frame. Murphy led the charge for DISA as he threw two strikes, which sealed the championship for the DISA squad.
"Last year in the league we struggled and this year it all came together," said Jonathan Goodlin.
"The team bowled fairly well tonight and DISA was on their game. This is the first time all year that we lost all eight points in a match," said Dawn Sweet, 76th MXW bowler.
The victory by DISA put their season-ending record at 160.0-80.0, while the loss drops the 76th MXW to a third place finish at 151.0-89.0
