Fresh off an appearance at the United States Hockey Spring Classic in Dallas, the Tinker Hawks I returned to the ice April 13 and came away with a 3-3 tie against the Ice Dogs.
Brad Poarch, Hawks goaltender, said the tournament in Dallas should give the Hawks an advantage in their game against the Ice Dogs.
"The caliber of play we saw in Dallas has improved our team and it should show tonight," he said.
The Hawks came out blazing, controlling the play for the first five minutes of period one. Forward James Behn put the Hawks on the board first after he intercepted a loose puck at center ice, skated into the left face-off circle and lifted a blistering wrist shot in the upper right corner of the Ice Dogs net.
In the second period, forward Miguel Lopez took a cross ice pass from Behn and put a shot through the five-hole giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Ice Dogs rallied in the third period. Forward Darren Weatherford tipped in a pass from Stan Jackson, cutting the score in half at the 5:10 mark.
Just over a minute later, defenseman Chris Beatty scored off a rebound to make the score 3-1.
The Ice Dogs responded with two unanswered goals, tying the score at 3 goals apiece with 5 minutes remaining in the game.
"We got a little sloppy in the third period and it showed on the scoreboard," Behn said.
The stars of the game for the Hawks were Behn, who had two goals and an assist, and Poarch, who stopped 24 of 27 shots he faced.
With the tie, the Hawks record is 13-6-1. The Hawks hit the ice again at 6 p.m. Sunday against The Storm at the Blazers Ice Centre.
