The Lackland AFB Warhawks defeated the Hawks 75-61 in the first game of the Southwest Men's Military Basketball Tournament March 29 at the Pitsanbarge Fitness and Sports Center at Sheppard AFB, Texas.
The Hawks got off to an early lead behind the sharp shooting of forward Phil Hawthorne, who made five of six three-point field goal attempts giving the Hawks a 37-35 advantage at halftime.
The second half would be the downfall for the Hawks. The Warhawks outscored Tinker 40-24 in the final 18 minutes to secure the victory, 71-65.
"This game should be an eye opener for us. When you do not protect the ball this is a typical outcome," said Griffin.
The Hawks were led in scoring by Hawthorne who poured in a game-high 32 points, while point guard Marquis Mitchell chipped in with 13 points and a team-high eight assists.
