The intramural soccer season got off to a flying start at the Tinker Sports Complex with all the soccer teams ready for play. A match between two of its top squads highlighted the week. The SPIRIT team defeated the 552nd Communications Group (CG) 3-0 under sunny but very blustery winds on March 27.
The SPIRIT team got on the score sheet at the 5:00 mark, as team co-captain, Levi Warren, intercepted a pass inside the 552nd CG penalty area and rifled a shot passed the net minder giving his team an early 1-0 lead.
The SPIRIT squad continued its dominance throughout the remainder of the first half. SPIRIT added to its lead as forward, Hien Huynh, intercepted an errant pass at mid-field then sprinted into the penalty area and sent a blistering shot past 552nd CG goaltender, Jason Anderson, making the score 2-0.
"Our advantage was due to our forwards being able to capitalize on the opportunities that were given by our opponent," said Jay Jarrett, goalkeeper for the SPIRIT.
The early stages of the second half saw a deadlock between both teams. The 552nd CG squad tried its best to break through the SPIRIT defense; however, they were stopped at every turn.
The SPIRIT rounded out the scoring with just over four minutes remaining in the contest as forward Derek Reed sent a quick low shot passed the 552nd CG net minder giving the SPIRIT an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
The win by SPIRIT improved their season record to 1-1, while the loss by the 552nd CG dropped their record to 0-2 on the season.
"We put a lot of pressure on their defense. Our offense was able to control the ball in the first and second half and that led us to victory," said Jarrett.
