Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE -- In Commanders Trophy Bowling League action Feb. 20, the 552nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron pulled off the upset of the league leading 552nd Communications Group. The seventh place 552nd AMXS won 3156-3132. In game one, Dallas Thompson, of the 552nd AMXS, and Kevin Grice, of the 552nd CG, each threw strikes through the first three frames. This strike bowling plus the handicap advantage the 552nd CG held gave their team a slight 563-559 lead. Bowlers Mike Cumella, Richard Stows and Rick Stutzman followed Thompson's lead and picked up the pace for the 552nd AMXS. The trio rolled three strikes apiece over the next four frames to increase their lead to 798-757. Game one came down to which team bowled the best in the 10th frame. Cumella and Thompson led the charge, giving the 552nd AMXS a close 1052-1020 victory. In the second game, Thompson continued his dominance on the lanes as he rolled four additional strikes, leading the 552nd AMXS a 901-792 advantage. Grice tried to rally his 552nd CG teammates by rolling four consecutive strikes, but his effort fell short and the 552nd AMXS claimed the 1126-1066 victory. The 552nd CG came out like gangbusters in the third game. They used their 52-pin handicap advantage and the expert bowling of Grice to get off the snide. Leading the way for the 552nd CG, Grice threw strikes in the first and seventh frames and picked up key spares in the fourth, sixth and ninth frames. The 1046-978 win in game three enabled the 552nd CG to secure two points from their opponent. "This was a total team effort tonight. The first two games we bowled great. The last game we had to scratch and claw to get the total pins win," said Cumella.
