Going into their Feb. 17 game, the Tinker Hawks I hockey team just wanted to keep doing what it has been doing. They accomplished their goal by not allowing their opponent to score any.
The Hawks posted a 4-0 shutout over The Storm in Oklahoma City Adult Hockey League action at the Blazers Ice Centre. The win raised the Hawks record to 11-1 and put them in a tie for first place in the Division II standings.
The Hawks jumped out quickly in the first period. They dominated play and controlled much of the action through the first 10 minutes.
At the 11:26 mark of the first, James Behn intercepted an errant pass in the Storm's end, skated to the Hawks side of the ice and drilled a wrist shot in the upper right corner of net for the early 1-0 lead.
The Hawks dominance continued in the second period. Hawks forward Adam Henley slithered a cross-ice pass to fellow forward Miguel Lopez, who deposited a quick shot into the back of The Storm's net.
With 2:00 remaining in the second, forward Todd Bayles gave the Hawks a three goal lead when put back a rebound off a shot from forward Dave McClean. This was Bayles' seventh goal in his last five games.
The Hawks finished the scoring at the 16:10 mark of the third period. Forward Andy Spivey redirected a shot by Henley past the opposing net minder. This was the last scoring of the contest, giving the Hawks the 4-0 victory.
"Our defense if offensive minded," said Chris Beatty, Hawks defenseman. "Additionally, we look to show the physical prowess on the defensive side. When this happens we make our presence known."
"Brad Poarch was once again a spectacular force in the net. This was his second consecutive shutout for the Hawks," said Behn.
Brad Poarch, who stopped all 19 shots he faced, got his second consecutive shutout and was one of the top three stars of the game. Defensemen Beatty and Ellyson both also played well and allowed The Storm very few scoring chances.
The Hawks return to the ice Sunday when the face off against Chesapeake at 8:30 p.m. the Blazers Ice Centre.
