Once again, the top spot in the Commanders Trophy Bowling league was up for grabs.
The top two teams - Hellifino and Defense Information Systems Agency -- squared off Feb. 6 at the Tinker Bowling Center. In the final tally, each team secured two points and gained a draw.
"This match should be very interesting and entertaining," said Hellifino bowler Dennis March. "Both of these teams are very competitive and evenly matched."
March and Scott Bagensie rolled strike after strike through the first five frames giving their side a decided advantage in game one. The DISA twosome of Jonathan Goodlin and Wayne Goodlin rallied their team and cut the lead to 911-896 through the eighth frame. In the pivotal 10th frame, the Goodlins combined for five strikes, giving DISA the 1069-1054 victory.
"The first game was indicative of our season," said Jonathan Goodlin. "When we needed a strike or two, one of team members stepped up and gave us what we needed."
The second game was a little more one-sided. Hellifino bowlers had a hard time finding their stride, while the DISA quintet of Mike Wang, Nick Lawter, Malachi Murphy and the Goodlins kept their composure. Jonathan Goodlin said his team's confidence got a boost as they were able to capitalize on their opportunities en route to the 1037-996 victory.
March said the third game was a must-win for Hellifino, who needed to win by more than 50 pins to gain a split.
March got his team rolling with four consecutive strikes to start game three. Bagensie helped the cause by throwing seven consecutive strikes in frames three through eight to give Hellifino an insurmountable advantage. In the final tally, Hellifino took game three 1114-1028, thus winning the total pins score of 3164-3134.
"Our team has a little difficulty with Hellifino," Jonathan Goodlin said. "They have five great bowlers, and it seems when you have them down, they find a way to get back into the match."
DISA's season record is 104.0-64.0, while Hellifino stands at 106.0-62.0
