With the intramural basketball season winding down, the battle for the position in the post-season tournament is heating up.
That was clearly evident Feb. 6 as the 552nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron took on the Navy at the Gerrity Fitness Center. In the end, the 552nd AMXS squad came out victorious 42-37.
The game was back and forth in the first half with neither team able to gain a sizeable advantage. The 552nd AMXS was led by center James Campbell, who scored seven points during a five-minute stretch. Toney Cohen led the way for the Navy early on by scoring seven points to knot the score at 15-15 with 2:36 left in the first stanza. The 552nd AMXS went on a 10-2 run to end the half. Forward Roderick Ivory scored eight of the 10 points, leading the 552nd AMXS to a 25-17 lead at the intermission.
Each team scored at will in the opening minutes of the second half. The Navy tied the game at 35 behind the shooting of forward Tony Buchanan, who scored 12 consecutive points. The Navy tried to turn up the defensive pressure; however, two costly turnovers in the final minute sealed the victory for the 552nd AMXS.
"The key to our victory tonight was teamwork," said Bryan Naff, 552nd AMXS head coach. "The team that plays together and can overcome adversity is the one that will be victorious."
The 552nd AMXS was led in scoring by Ivory and Campbell, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Buchanan, who had a game-high 24 points, led the way for the Navy.    The win improved the 552nd AMXS record to 3-5, while the loss dropped the Navy to 4-4 on the season.
