In a battle of Combat Communications Squadrons Jan. 2, the 33rd CCS outbowled the 34th CCS 3056-2895 to claim bragging rights.
"We have a friendly competition with members of the other squadrons within the 3rd Combat Communications Support Squadron and it is a lot of fun competing against our friends," said Randy Reeves, 33rd CCS bowler. The first game got off to a slow start due largely in part to the two week layoff from the holiday break. After a few frames, both sides shook off the rust and the strikes and spares started to pile up. Dean Gracey, 34th CCS, led the charge with three strikes in the initial four frames giving his team an early 579-523 advantage.
However, the quintet from the 33rd CCS -- Susan McCarter, Gordon Carey, Christopher Cros, Reeves and Danny Kates -- banded together to overtake their opponents in the eighth frame to claim the 948-937 victory. Game two of the match was like déjà vu of game one. Gracey and his teammates Kurt Ledig, Ken Giesbrecht, Diana Thompson and Joe Deal had a 650-602 lead through the first five frames of action.
McCarter, Reeves and Kates strung two strikes apiece in the sixth and seventh frames giving the 33rd CCS an insurmountable lead to capture the 1062-944 victory in game two.
In the final game, the teams matched each other strike for strike and spare for spare through the first four frames. The 34th CCS held a slight advantage due to their 79-pin handicap. As the 33rd CCS made their surge, Gracey led the 34th CCS squad with four consecutive strikes in the first six frames giving his side a 744-734 lead.
The lead was short lived as Reeves and Kates continued their hot bowling with strikes and spares in frames seven through 10, leading the 33rd CCS to a 1067-1003 win in game three. Additionally, the 33rd CCS garnered another two points by capturing the total pin advantage over their opponents.
The 33rd CCS win puts them at 68.0-60.0 in the season standings, while the 34th CCS loss drops them to 63.0-65.0.
