Six wrestlers displayed their talents at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center's third annual wrestling extravaganza Dec. 14.
A special guest referee donated his time for this event. Kirby Keith, an all U.S. Marine Corps wrestler (1982-1985) and a member of the USA national wrestling team in 1984, 1988 and 1996 volunteered his time and expertise.
The first match of the evening featured Timothy Denton, 552nd Maintenance Squadron against Matthew Machala, 965th Airborne Air Control Squadron, in the light heavyweight class. Machala dominated his opponent from the outset and gained a victory by pin fall at :50 of the first period.
The second match was the most competitive of the night. William Moore, 33rd Combat Communications Squadron, defeated Derek Ellerd, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, 8-4.
Robert Holcomb, 545th Propulsion Maintenance Squadron, faced Joe Gray, Center of Naval Aviation Technical Training, in the final match. This was another fast and furious wrestling match. Gray secured an early advantage and pinned his opponent at :55 of the first round.
"This was a real great chance to display our wrestling talents in a small but very competitive event," said Gray.
The winners of the matches received a gold medal and a gift certificate for a smoked turkey from the Tinker Golf Course. The losers received a sliver medal and a $20 gift certificate from the Tinker Golf Course.
