Chaplains Corner: Choose your message wisely Published Dec. 6, 2007 By Chaplain (Capt.) Martin Booth Tinker Chapel TINKER AIR FORCE BASE -- Whenever I see someone using an iPod, or some other private listening device, I ask myself, "I wonder what they are listening to?" Maybe I would like their style of music, or maybe I would not. Then, I speculate about the words to the song. Are they uplifting and positive, or do they denigrate other people? The messages we listen to can have a powerful influence on our attitudes and actions. Our minds and hearts are shaped by what we hear and see, whether it is in the form of a song or a movie. During this time of year we are inundated with commercials and a host of activities that beg for our attention. The audio and visual stimuli can be overwhelming. Some of them are inspiring, while others appeal to our greed. We have the luxury of choosing which message we listen to. The Christmas holiday is celebrated in many different ways. For some people, it is the time to celebrate the birth of their Savior, Jesus Christ. Others use this time to exchange gifts and spend time with family, with no religious significance. Some people do not observe Christmas at all. In years past, toy manufacturers created serious hype followed by a sudden shortage. People stood in line for hours only to fight over a Wii, Furby, Beanie Baby, or Tickle Me Elmo. What is the message that is communicated? "You must buy this gift at the expense of your budget, peace of mind or sanity. The traditional Christmas message has been, "Peace on earth, goodwill to men." Time spent with family, giving gifts, or reflecting on God's goodness tells us that there is more to life than the material. Devotion to faith, family, and freedom provides more deep down satisfaction than anything we could buy. So, what is playing on your iPod? The message of "do more, buy more, and get more" can wear us out. The message "generosity, peace, and invest in the lives of others" will give us hope, purpose, and strength. My prayer is that we will choose the message we listen to wisely. Please have a safe and blessed Christmas holiday.
