In the last month, Tinker Air Force Base has seen an increase of burglaries in base housing and the dormitories. Unsecured property is the leading cause of theft on Tinker.
Statistically, theft of personal property increases as the holiday season nears. Although every effort to investigate these crimes is taken by Security Forces following a burglary, certain variables play an instrumental role in whether or not your case will be solved.
Ensuring your residence is secured every time you are away is the first step in preventing a would-be thief who may be preying on your valuables. Maintaining a detailed list of all personal property of value may be the difference between total loss and recovery.
Furthermore, providing serial numbers or identifying markings of stolen property to Security Forces can prove instrumental to the investigation process, especially in the prosecution, and conviction of those suspected of burglary.
   Steps in preventing theft:
-- Lock residence and vehicles while away
-- Lock your office when unattended -- Secure bicycles and other property that is left outdoors
   -- Secure car keys
-- Mark and take photos of valuables and annotate serial numbers on items such as stereos, cameras and computers
-- Use a lock at the gym or work center locker to secure your property
Remember, if you leave it unsecured someone will secure it for you. Anyone having information regarding any crime committed on base should call Crime Stoppers at 734-2000.
Actions to be taken if your home is burglarized:
   -- Avoid touching anything
   -- Leave the residence immediately
   -- Notify Security Forces at 734-3737or 734-3738
-- Do not reenter your residence until Security Forces arrive on-scene
   Crime Prevention Information:
The 72nd Security Forces Crime Prevention Section provides military and civilian organizations on Tinker Air Force Base with briefings and community involvement. Briefing topics include holiday awareness, personal safety and identity theft. Any personnel living or working on Tinker can request a Crime Prevention Survey. The results from these surveys are used to educate personnel about the steps they can take to protect themselves and their property.
Furthermore, the Crime Prevention section can provide child identification cards that will give law enforcement agencies the information they will need to quickly and safely locate your child in the event of an emergency.
Information on these cards include a recent photograph, brief medical information, necessary personal information, a DNA hair sample, fingerprints, physical information and instructions on how to complete the card and keep it safe.
If your organization needs to schedule a briefing, contact Police Services at 734-4433. Allow at least one week notice for any requested briefing.
