Tinker Elementary School students were delighted to receive a visit from a unique guest Nov. 19. Financial consultant and children's author, Sam X. Renick and his partner, Sammy the "Get in the Habit" Rabbit, made a special appearance providing an engaging and educational presentation to approximately 125 kids, encouraging the development of good financial habits.
Sammy is part of the "It's a Habit Company, Inc." dedicated to teaching financial literacy. Reading from his book, It's a Habit Sammy Rabbit, and playing songs from the program soundtrack, Celebrate Saving. Mr. Renick entertained the students while promoting the importance of saving money and making it a life long habit.
"Saving money and reading make going to college and other dreams come true," said Mr. Renick. "I can't think of two more critical skills for ensuring the future for children and families."
The program, sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society was brought to the Tinker community through a dynamic partnership between the Family Support Center and the Tinker Federal Credit Union.
On behalf of TFCU, Branch Manager Jay Foote presented Sam and Sammy with a generous donation to express their appreciation, unwavering dedication and continuing support of community efforts to educate and prepare youth for making sound financial decisions.
"Children's financial education is important and well worth the investment," said Jane Allen, Family Support Center flight chief.
"For about $8 per student, TFCU provided community members an invaluable and early opportunity to learn simple investment strategies such as 'From every dollar save a dime,' and 'Don't spend more than you make'. These principles will promote saving habits and life skills that will benefit these kids throughout their lives," Ms. Allen added.
After the show, the children met Sammy the Rabbit and received a copy of the Celebrate Saving CD, courtesy of TFCU. For more information on the "It's a Habit!" company, visit www.itsahabit.com.
