Taking the Challenge OC-ALC, AFGE Union leaders gear up for Wellness Challenge Published Nov. 30, 2007 By Kandis West Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE -- In the midst of Thanksgiving feasts, holiday hams and festive fudge, the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center management team and the American Federation of Government Employees Local 916 members are gearing up for a six-month wellness challenge. "Our objective is to try to continue improving the partnership between the union and management and continue to promote a strong workforce," said OC-ALC Executive Director John Over, the management team leader. "Our secondary objective is to promote wellness and increased activity in the workforce." The challenge unofficially kicked-off Nov. 20 with a briefing to both teams. Each team will consist of 20 people and all team members will perform a Microfit Assessment and a Cardiac Risk Profile. The Microfit test is a standard fitness evaluation that measures several components of fitness like blood pressure, flexibility, strength and cardiac capacity. The Cardiac Risk Profile is a full lipid panel test on cholesterol and glucose (blood sugar) levels. It is performed with a finger stick and the results are available in about 5 minutes. Each person is given a briefing on why it is important to check and maintain good levels. Half of the points will be awarded for improvement of the Microfit Assessment and CRP test scores. Other points will be awarded by participation in Fitlinxx and wellness classes as well as a final challenge between the two teams at the conclusion of the program. Both the Microfit Assessment and CRP tests are free to all Department of Defense civilians as a part of the Civilian Health Promotion Services.
