The game or art of bowling can be challenging and rewarding in the same breath. On Oct. 10, it was definitely rewarding for Christopher Sweet.
In a match against the Center for Naval Aviation and Technical Training team, Sweet bowled a perfect game. The 76th Maintenance Wing worker rolled strike after strike on lanes 19 and 20 and had all the bowlers on the edge of their seat watching this great bowling exhibition.
As Sweet rolled his last ball and all the pins dropped, he received a standing ovation.
"That was impressive accomplishment and you only get to see that once or twice during the year here at the Tinker Bowling Center," said Traci Applebee, league secretary for the Commanders Trophy league.
Sweet, who has had five perfect games in his bowling career, has been bowling since the age of 12. He prides himself on his competitive nature and he enjoys himself at the bowling alley.
"I like to joke around while I am awaiting to bowl, but when it is my turn to roll the ball down the lane, I am totally focused," he said.
Sweet bowls in three separate leagues at the Tinker Bowling Center and maintains a 236 average in the Commanders Trophy league.
"I love bowling because of the head to head competition," he said, "and I thoroughly enjoy having fun with the people I bowl with on a weekly basis."
One highlight of his bowling career happened when he was asked to participate in the All Armed Forces Bowling Tryout Camp last year. Also, Sweet and his wife, Dawn, are the reigning military mixed doubles champions, winning the title in Las Vegas last January.
"I try and improve each and every time I bowl," he said. "This past summer I took lessons from former women's professional tour bowler, Anne Marie Duggan, which has improved my game immensely."
Sweet said sometimes people say he is too hard on himself and his own worst critic. "But that is my competitive side taking over," he said.
Sweet has turned in his paperwork for the Armed Forces Championships, held Dec. 3-6 at Fort Dix, N.J.
"I am looking forward to this great opportunity to represent the Air Force and Tinker," said Sweet.
