WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Celebrating "30 years of running," the Air Force Marathon is thrilled to announce the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds as the featured aircraft for the 2026 race weekend, scheduled for September 18-19. Alongside this exciting partnership, marathon organizers are rolling out a series of significant updates to the event schedule, including new start times, course adjustments, and a brand-new race challenge.
"We are incredibly enthusiastic about our partnership with the Thunderbirds team this year," said Interim Race Director Jasmine Gwin. "While their current show schedule prevents them from doing a fly-over on race day, we are thrilled that they will have team members on the ground engaging directly with the public throughout the weekend."
The marathon is a tremendous partnership with our local community and demonstrates the great support that Airmen receive in our region. Highlighting this connection, the half marathon course will now go through the Fairborn Fly Zone, allowing all half marathon runners to experience the excitement and unwavering support of our local residents first-hand.
In a move to prioritize runner safety and mitigate the heat-related issues experienced in previous years, the 2026 schedule features adjusted start times. The full marathon will now begin an hour earlier at 6:30 a.m. Additionally, the 10K and half marathon events are slated for a 7:15 a.m. start.
These adjusted start times have also paved the way for an exciting new addition to the race weekend: the Aim High Challenge. This new event allows runners to complete the Friday night 5K in addition to any of the Saturday events (10K, half marathon, or full marathon). Any participant who successfully completes the Aim High Challenge will be awarded a special commemorative medal.
The community is cordially invited to attend the Finish Line Festival on the grounds of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on Saturday, September 19. Attendees are encouraged to celebrate with the runners as they cross the finish line and enjoy a variety of festivities, including live music and food.
The success of the Air Force Marathon relies heavily on community support. Volunteers are always needed throughout the weekend to assist with packet pick-up, hospitality tents, hydration stations, and various other crucial roles. Volunteer registration officially opens on May 1 and is available for both individuals and groups looking to support the runners.
