72nd Air Base Wing Commander's Independence Day Message Published June 30, 2016 72nd ABW Commander TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Wildcatters, Summer is well underway and 4th of July celebrations and a long weekend are just ahead. While we look forward to time with family and friends, it is important that each of us remain aware of the many potential risks involved in summer activities and particularly those associated with 4th of July celebrations. Many of you will be travelling over this holiday weekend. Be sure you use your risk management skills before taking the trip. Many fatalities are caused by fatigue (it'll just be a quick trip, I can rest when I get back). Make sure you get plenty of rest before you start that trip or have other drivers so you can rotate driving responsibility. As some of you may be travelling to a lake or other water spot, please ensure that you take the time to protect yourself and family/friends from the hazards associated with water activities. Wear a life vest if you are boating, know your limits if you swim, and lastly - look out for one another while in the water! Alcohol and most activities don't mix. If you choose to partake, please ensure you have designated driver, stay out of the water and refrain from inherently dangerous activities. And while we are speaking of the 4th of July, let's talk fireworks. Each 4th of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Sparklers, which seem like the least hazardous of all fireworks, are actually extremely dangerous, burning at temperatures in excess of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. I ask that you please consider going to a public fireworks display conducted by trained professionals. That is the safest way to enjoy the holiday. Thank you for your service! Have fun, but be safe!
