AROUND TINKER: Two Wildcatters honored with commander’s awards Published March 10, 2016 By 72nd Air Base Wing TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Capt. Tyler Kaido has been with the 72nd Air Base Wing Legal Office since November 2013, serving as the chief of General Law, chief of Adverse Actions and now chief of Military Justice. During his time here, Captain Kaido has seamlessly transitioned from a first term JAG to a seasoned legal adviser. A leader among his peers, Captain Kaido has excelled in every position he's held. As the chief of Adverse Actions, the captain led the office to No. 1 in Air Force Materiel Command in on-time Article 15 processing. As the chief of Military Justice, Captain Kaido brought two sexual assault cases to court and orchestrated the trial of three different Airmen in one week, garnering jail time for all three Airmen who were convicted of illegal drug use, and one for conspiring to commit premeditated murder, all while ensuring that the due process rights of all accused Airmen were protected. In addition to managing the robust military justice program at Tinker, he also drafted 83 documents, advised 69 Airmen and their dependents and assisted in three pro-se divorce cases. His legal assistance efforts saved his fellow Airmen more than $30,000 in legal fees. Captain Kaido serves as the face of the legal office at two local law schools where he helped recruit and coordinate 10 interviews for potential new JAGs. He was a key player during the October 2015 UEI and Article 6 inspections where his efforts helped vault the legal office to a rare "excellent" score from the Judge Advocate General's inspection team. Lori Long, also from the 72nd ABW Legal Office, is a superstar who goes well above and beyond what she is paid to do. Recently hired into the vacant General Law paralegal position, she continues to perform her job as discharge clerk while transitioning into her new position. As the general law paralegal, she is in charge of managing a robust magistrate court program in addition to assisting more than 2,000 legal assistance clients a year, all while still processing discharges for the entire base, including tenant units. As the discharge clerk, she reworked the entire program, establishing templates to streamline the process, including a new demotion and reinstatement form that would ensure commanders coordinate with the legal office before taking any action. She not only manages the discharge packages, but navigates the sometimes complex relationship between the legal office and the first sergeants. In addition to carrying the workload of two people, Ms. Long is in charge of this year's tax program, which helped Tinker Airmen receive close to $1.1 million in refunds last year and saved them $136,000 in filing fees. Ms. Long was also recognized as a superior/outstanding performer by both the Judge Advocate General's Article 6 Inspection team and the IG inspection team during the UEI.
