Air Force pilot program aims to lead Tinker personnel to healthy lifestyle Published Jan. 21, 2016 By Kimberly Woodruff Staff Writer TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Tinker is one of seven Air Force bases selected to serve as a pilot for the Healthcare to Health program. H2H is responsible for two main programs -- 5210, a healthy military children messaging campaign, and Group Lifestyle Balance, a weight management program. GLB sessions will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 26 and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 27. Annie Coker, a dietitian with the 72nd Medical Group, said the GLB class includes meal planning, counting calories, reading labels, handling pitfalls and managing stress. The class meets once a week for 12 weeks, and after the class, participants have follow-up support for a year. "This isn't a diet, but a long term and different way to look at food," said Ms. Coker. "It can help build good habits." The overall goal of the class is for each participant to lose 7 percent of their weight and to increase their physical activity to 150 minutes a week. Ms. Coker said it all begins with the awareness and finding out what participants are doing now. According to Ms. Coker, participants will learn how to keep a food journal. She looks over the journal each week and writes helpful notes. "It's amazing when you write it all down and you can see what you are eating," she said. "We have just started the program and this is the first group and it is nice to see them get excited when they lose weight and step on the scale." The children's program, 5210, is for all children, not just those who are overweight. The name 5210 refers to five fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of screen time, one hour of activity and zero sugar sweetened beverages. "Kids are receptive to the program and find this interesting, even if they don't follow it," said Ms. Coker. "Although it is a kids program, it is good advice for any of us, no matter our age." In the program, children will learn about healthy portion sizes and hidden sugar content in some of their favorite foods. "If a kid is 10 years old and already overeating, they'll do it their entire life," said Ms. Coker. Anyone with base access may join up for either GLB or 5210 programs.
