The Navy VQ-7 squad flew by 72 OSS in their first intramural basketball game of the season Jan. 12.

With the lead changing hands early on, VQ-7 took charge and moved out with 4:30 left in the first 16-minute half. They gained an 18-15 lead that only grew in margin from there and won the game 53-36.

VQ-7's Thatch (only last names were listed on the roster) was the game's top scorer with 15 points. Teammate Sean Flores was close behind with 14. Flores hit four treys to Thatch's two.

72 OSS's Michael Jacobs tied Flores' total to lead his team, including two 3-pointers. Squadmate Gregory Hanks shot for 12 points.

Sharp plays included Hanks' drive into the middle of the paint at 7:30 in the first half. He missed the straight shot, but recovered the rebound under the basket and nailed a hook shot on the right as he was fouled.

Later in the first half, Navy's McClure intercepted a long pass in 72 OSS's court. He tossed the ball past half-court to Wimett at the right-side 3-point line. Wimett dropped the ball inside to Ramos, who hooked for 2.

David Kopec, head coach/captain of 72 OSS, said the team is slowly improving with all the players together after the holiday break. Contesting more 3-pointers would have helped their defense, he said.

"We switched from man defense to a 3-2 zone defense in the second half, but we were still not able to slow down the hot shooting from VQ-7," he said. "On offense we did well, but we need to drive to the basket more when the opponent lacks a shot blocker.

"Overall, I'm happy with the effort our guys put out there, but VQ-7 is one of the best teams we have played and they will be a challenge for anyone."
