A mass flu shot line will be held for family members and retirees from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nov. 25 in the 72nd Medical Group's Heritage Hall. Active duty are also welcome to attend.

The flu vaccine is not available on Tinker for civilian employees. Civilians are highly encouraged to receive the flu vaccine off base. Off-base options for the flu vaccine include a primary care physician's office or local pharmacies. To find a location nearest you, visit: http://flushot.healthmap.org.

The flu usually comes on suddenly and the symptoms can be similar for a common cold, but it is not always easy to tell the difference. With the flu, there is usually, but not always, a fever and chills. Other symptoms include muscle aches, runny, or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, feeling tired and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.

Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older, especially pregnant women and those at high risk of complications, including the elderly, children younger than 5 years and those with underlying medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes.

The flu vaccine is the best defense, but also eating healthy, getting plenty of rest and vigilant hand washing is recommended to avoid catching the flu.

The Tinker Immunization Clinic offers flu shots for active duty members, retirees and dependents from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. weekdays. Call 582-6521 for more information. If you're unable to attend the mass flu line, you may still come in during regular business hours.

Flu shots are mandatory for all active duty, Reserve and Guard members, and are optional for dependents and retirees.
