The Tinker Youth Center offers Taekwondo classes taught by World Taekwondo Federation certified instructors. Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts that teaches non-violent forms of self-defense with a long list of benefits.

Taekwondo teaches control, respect, and peace while providing anaerobic and aerobic exercise. Classes begin with dynamic stretching then move into active movements.
"Brooke has been practicing for four years, she really enjoys it. It is something fun that keeps her active and has improved her coordination," Steve Schutrum says about his 12-year-old daughter.

The theory of power is taught through spins and kicks, which improves coordination and balance. Students will learn a variety of kicks independently, then work their way up to kicking multiple times in a sequence.

Taekwondo is just as mental as it is physical and can improve self-esteem.  The increase of physical and mental exercise will help students find discipline, concentration, and self-confidence. These characteristics are known to improve attitudes and concentration levels, resulting in better grades in school and less stress at work.

Classes at the Tinker Youth Center are available for ages 6 through adult and are open to active duty, civilians, contractors and retirees. Drop in, monthly and family rates are available. For more information about classes call 734-7866, visit TinkerLiving.com/Youth or stop by the youth center.
