Fitness center's grand reopening features prizes, competitions

The Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center daylong grand reopening Oct. 21 will feature prizes, competitions and a chance to check out a bevy of new fitness machines and other upgrades.

The Gerrity staff is eager to show off the doubling of the cardio workout area and an expanded free weights room, Recreation Assistant Andre Lancaster said.

New cardio machines, with more being installed soon, feature Android,  Apple operating system, Bluetooth connectivity and built-in display screens.

The larger free weights area features new kinds of workout options, including a Freemotion strength and resistance trainer and a Matrix cable crossover pulley machine.

The $2.2 million makeover includes new flooring and paint scheme for the multipurpose room. The site features a full-size basketball court and hosts Zumba, yoga, squadron PT, etc.

Grand reopening schedule
Cardio 5Ks - There will be three two-hour time slots to record your 5K time on your choice of treadmill, elliptical, bike or stair stepper. The times are 5 to 7 a.m.; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and 3 to 5 p.m.

Power Pump - 9:30 a.m.

Bench press competitions - 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

3-point basketball shootouts -
11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Ribbon cutting - 2 p.m.

Zumba - 4 p.m.
