Hawks dominate in first tournament Published Nov. 6, 2014 By John Parker Staff Writer TINKER AIR FORCE BASE - Okla. -- Tinker Hawks basketball is on track for another championship-caliber season after the team went undefeated in a round robin tournament last weekend. The base's men's varsity basketball team hosted the tourney Saturday and Sunday at the Gerrity Fitness Center. The Hawks won the tournament with four consecutive wins against Lawton's Fort Sill Army team and the Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., varsity. "It appears that Tinker is starting off the season well to support our back-to-back conference championships of the past," said coach Clarence "Griff" Griffin. "The word around the conference is no one wants us to have a three-peat, but I think we'll have something to say about that." The Hawks topped Fort Sill 82-75 in their Saturday opener. Top scorers were Jarail Smith with 35, Corey Clark, 16 and D. Finley, 15. Finley led scoring in the second Saturday game against Whiteman with 23 points. The Hawks edged Whiteman 81-74, helped by other scoring leaders Smith, 22, and Anthony Smith, 11. Sunday started great for the Hawks, with a 101-66 blowout of Whiteman. Jarail Smith, last year's leading scorer, led points with 32, followed by Clark, 23, and Finley, 20. The Hawks sealed the tournament win 97-85 versus Fort Sill. Jarail Smith scored 30, with Finley following close with 28. Earl Moseby netted 10 points. "These are our first games of the season," Griffin said. "We are obviously not going to have a problem scoring points, but we're going to work on the defense a little bit more. "We have lots of new pieces, and as you can tell, we have a new big-time scorer in Finley, who has stepped up and become a force that opposing teams will to deal with." The team's next games will be at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., on Nov. 15.
