Intramural teams shooting for basketball title
TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Flight Controllers #2, the base basketball champs two years ago, gave the 3rd Combat Communications Group more static than they could handle Tuesday. The 960th Airborne Air Control Squadron disbarred the JAG from the base basketball playoffs by handing the lawyers their second loss of the double-elimination tournament. And the Navy tossed a wrench into the title hopes of the 552nd Maintenance Squadron (AGE), mauling the mechanics.
FC#2 vs. 3CCG
The flight controllers started a little slow but gained momentum as the first half progressed and never let up, trouncing the Third Herd, 62-36.
Emanuel Grayson led FC#2 in scoring, with 18 points, and Ryan Rutledge got 16. Jumar "Mook" Reynolds had 10, and Oryan Shannon, Corey Clark and Ned Neeland all had 6 each.
John Rucker scored 20 points for the 3 CCG, more than half of the team's production. Manuel Deluna got 7; Joe Freeman, 6; and Chris Barrett, 3. They were assisted by Arthur Halmon and Scott Jardine.
Referee Mike Walker called only a dozen fouls during the game: seven on 3CCG and five on FC#2. Walker, who has been a referee for 22 years, was the lone "umpire" for Tuesday's game.
FC#2 is scheduled to play the Jammers on Jan. 24. The 3 CCG won by forfeit over the 31 CBCS on Jan. 8.
960th AACS vs. JAG
In the game Monday between the legal beagles and the air controllers, the JAG was stronger on rebounds but the AACS was more accurate in shooting. The duel featured a multitude of steals and a flurry of fouls by both teams.
The lawyers led for the first 13 minutes of the game, but the controllers tied the score at 19 and the match was knotted at 22-all at halftime. Five minutes into the second half the controllers pulled ahead by 3 points, and never surrendered the lead afterward, winning 45-37
Josh Edwards of the 960th AACS led all scorers with 17 points produced from five treys and a bucket. Trevor Brown scored 8; Nick Trousset, Derrick Green and Winston Jean-Pierre, 6 each; and Chris Heck, 2. They were assisted by Chad Gulledge.
David Vercellone paced the JAG with 11 points, including three treys; Andrew Kasman, 8; Ken White, 5; Cedric Powers and Nate Mayenschein, 4 apiece; Bailee Roby, 3; and Douglas Arnett, 2. Assisting them were John Fuentes and Brad Maxwell.
Referees whistled 19 fouls during the game, 10 against the JAG and nine against the AACS. Kasman and Brown accumulated four fouls each.
Both squads were beaten previously. The AACS lost to the 72nd SFS, while the JAG was defeated by the AMX Dragons.
Navy vs. 552nd MXS (AGE)
The Navy led the 552nd MXS (AGE) by 15 at halftime of their game Monday, 29-14, and had extended the gap to 21 points, 54-33, by the end of the contest.
Chase Green led the scoring for the Sailors with 14 points, followed closely by Wesley "Dre" Hay, 13, and George Mosley, 11; Andrew Bates, 8; Javonte Gray, Daniel Asberry, Gary Weber and Nicholas Sibley, 2 apiece. They were assisted by Damon Ireland.
Chris Padilla and Bashawn Camper tallied 9 points each for the Airmen; Treyvion Duenas, 7; Colton Keel, 6; and Thomas Pennington, 2. They were assisted by Robert Porter.
The Sailors were whistled for 15 fouls during the game; the Airmen, 6.

Flight Controllers #1 defeated the 33rd Combat Communications Squadron, 43-37; AMX Dragons 33 vs. 72nd Med Group 30; and Jammers 57 vs. 550th Commodities Maintenance Squadron 44. DISA forfeited to the Gym Rats; ironically, DISA won its first-round game in the tournament by default when the 72 OSS was a no-show.
The 552nd Maintenance Operations Squadron was eliminated from the playoffs after the team failed to show for its game Tuesday against Army Strong. The 552 MOS was dismantled by the 550 CMMXS is a first-round contest.
FC#1 defeated the Gym Rats to capture the base basketball championship in 2012, and won the title in 2010, too. In 2011, FC#1 was the runner-up to champion FC#2.
