Ice Research
One of the principal 'flying laboratories' used by the Air Materiel Command's ice researchers at Ypsilanti, Mich. is this pipe-bedecked C-54. If nature provided bad weather cannot be found the pipe maze can take over, providing rain, snow, fog or mist to help engineers in designing and testing the latest anti-icing equipment. Two other unorthodox planes - an ice-making B-24 and a B-29 - are also used in the experiments.
